内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Kim, Jihyun. 2018. “A Contrastive Study of Korean and Japanese on Conditional Clauses without Main Clauses." The Journal of Linguistic Science 85:99-119. This study aims to describe the characteristics of sentences which have conditional endings that appear to lack main clauses in the Korean and Japanese languages. These “simple" sentences with conditional endings can be split into two types: one that retains the original conditional meaning that comes from contextual ellipsis, and the other that develops different modal meanings which are considered in the process of changing their grammatical functions-a kind of grammaticalization. This study will demonstrate that Japanese conditionals are more likely to drop their main clauses and extend other modal meanings than Korean conditionals are, and Korean conditionals tend to maintain the formal main clause by using anaphora even when the contextual ellipsis occurs. One difference is attributed to the fact that Japanese has a group of modal words called “final particles". The contrastive observation in this study will clearly show that the two languages are structurally dissimilar despite their typological proximity. (University of Miyazaki)
