内容記述 | The aim of this article is to identify a diagram having metaphorical property by nature. We can identify three types of metaphorical property on diagrams. First, we must regard a written "point" as an abstract "point", though in fact a written "point" has area. This action "regard" leads to the first type of metaphor. Second, when we draw a diagram, we often regard this diagram as a typical diagram of any cases. For instance, when we prove the theorem "A isosceles triangle has two epual angles", we often draw a triangle. Even though we prove the theorem only using the triangle diagram, we don't think it special case, for we can prove the theorem in the same way as using another triangle diagram. So we call this property the second type of metaphor. The third type of metaphor on diagram is the most noticeable. Otte refers to two aspects of function on diagram, algorismic visualization and ideographic visualization. The latter leads to metaphorical understanding. Diagram has not only a property of picture but a property of formula-- a relation of x and y. This diagram creates new meaning. This function of the diagram is third type of metaphor. Rigorously speaking, diagram itself is not a metaphor. When a person intends to represent something metaphorically by a diagram, the diagram comes to be a metaphor. Diagram, however, has property of metaphor by nature, so it is often used as a metaphor. |
