内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 For understanding the geographical variability in arsenic (As) levels on regional scale, a blanket survey was conducted along selected transects in Upper Indus Basin, Punjab using field test kits. Over 19,789 wells have been tested so far along three selected transects covering a total distance of 955Km from 2015-2017. These transects cover active and abandoned flood plains and bar uplands of Chaj (between Ravi and Chenab rivers) and Rachna (between Jhelum and Chenab rivers) Doabs. More than 78% of tested wells were present within WHO prescribed limits (10μg/L), while 11% were within National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) of 50μg/L. The remaining 11% tested wells had As levels above 50 μg/L. The results indicated areas along River Ravi are more contaminated with respect to As. Out of 3382 wells tested along Ravi transect, 34% had As levels within WHO limits. 26% wells were safe with regard to NEQS while remaining 40% samples had As levels higher than 50 μg/L. Testing of millions wells for arsenic is urgently needed to reduce exposure throughout South Asia. This is feasible provided such campaigns are conducted with a field kit.
