内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Contamination of drinking water with high concentrations of arsenic is widespread throughout the world, which has severely affccted millions of people. Considering the carcinogenicity and toxicity of arsenic, treatment of arsenic contaminated water has become a high priority and treated water must meet drinking water standards. In lndia, a range of indigenous technologies has been developed for removing arsenic from water but a very few technologies showed satisfactory performance at the field leveI, both in terms of arsenic removal efficiency and sustainability. The major setbacks with most of the technologies remain with the operation, maintenance, generation of toxic byproduets and their disposal. Hence there is a necessity to develop a highly affordable indigenous technology for the effieient removal of arsenic from drinking water without having the problem of residual by-produets. This review focuses on the recent progress that has been made in understanding biomethylation of arsenic by microorganisms for the purpose of arsenic bioremediation.
