Uncrosslinked dithiocarbamate type β-chitosan was prepared by reacting β-chitosan with carbon disulfide in aqueous acetic acid and ammonical methanol. crosslinked dithiocarbamate type β-chitosan was prepared by 4 step reactions including imination protection with benzaldehyde, crosslinking with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, deprotection, and dithiocarbamation with carbon disulfide. Preliminarily, sulfur contents of both gels were estimated using ICP-AES and combustion ion chromatography. Solubility tests of both gels to acidic solutions were also examined. Then, time course dependency of cadmium adsorption, pH dependency, maximum loading capacity and column chromatographical separation of cadmium over zinc were investigated. They exhibited selective removal of cadmium over zinc. It was found that both gels exhibited excellent cadmium selectivity over other metals investigated, although sulfur contents were not significantly high. Maximum loading capacity of cadmium ion for uncrosslinked and crosslinked dithiocarbamate type β-chitosan gels were estimated to be 0.60 and 0.67 mol kg^-1-resin.
