The curves for the Fourier spectral amplitude ratio (V/H) of vertical to horizontal components are analyzed and summarized in terms of the mean and standard deviation of them for three types of surface soil conditions. Also the characteristics of the vertical ground motions synthesized using the thrust (reverse) kinematic source models are compared with the observed curves for the V/H spectral ratio as well as the records at the KiK-net IWATH25 station during the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku earthquake in Japan. Finally, an engineering method to simulate vertical ground motion is presented using the proposed V/H spectral ratio and the concept of phase motion.
