内容記述 | The use of ultrasonic evaluation techniques for selecting superior meat animals is popular at present in purebred beef and swine farms in forelgn countries. These techniques, however, are not in wide use in selection of beef cattle in Japan. Performance tested Japanese Black bulls were ultrasonically scanned to apply these techniques for selecting superior beef bulls. There were not very much changes of slope with age in ultrasonic estimates of fat thickness on most of bulls. The average value of ultrasonic estimates of this trait was 17.5±4.4mm. The ultrasonic estimates of M. long. thoracis area of bulls were growing linearly until 20 to 25 months of age and attained to the ninety percentage of mature stage (55.0±0.2cm^2) on 40 to 55 months of age, The ultrasonic estimates of marbling score of bulls were almost closer to zero at the end of performance testing. The ultrasonic estimates of this trait, however, were increasing to the ninty percentage of mature stage (+2.9±0.7) on 29 to 30 months of age in numerous bulls. By using multiple regression equations fat thickness, M. long. thoracis area and marbling score of bulls on 40 months of age can be predicted from the ultrasonic estimates of carcass traits and body measurements on 16 months of age with contribution ratios of 75.6-78.4%, 88.6-90.0% and 53.0-61.1%, respectively. The ratios of contribution for predicting carcass traits of progeny tested steers were 33.2% for fat thickness, 22.3% for M. long. thoracis area and 39.4% for marbling score, respectively, by using multiple regression equations which adopted ultrasonic estimates of carcass traits of sires and maternal grandsires and body measurements of these steers at the end of progeny teting. The ratios of contribution of ultrasonic estimates of carcass traits of maternal grandsires for predicting every carcass traits of progeny tested steers were very small. |
