Reliable pitch extraction methods for monophonic signals exist, but polyphonic cases are much more difficult, especially if the number of the sound sources is not known. In this report, a sequential estimation method for the number of the sound sources is proposed. Using the peak detection in the time-domain and the exponentially decaying power model, the generation and the continuity of each sound source is checked.
