The 3rd grade science students of the department of education (N=18) were asked to respond and explain two problems.The first problem was about a ball thrown up in the air and the second one was about a space rocket. Through the analysis, the following` conceptions for explanation 'were found.\n1) application of the Newton's second law\n2) specification of acting force to the object\n3) application of the Newton's first law\n4) refference to gravity \n5) application of the knowlege gained from accepted sceince\n6) unsuitable use of the words of accepted scince\n7) the intrinsic force of the obect\n8) the conservation of inertial motion\n9) the correspondence between force and motion\n10) the comparision between large and small force\n l) -4) are conceptions of accepted science. 7) -10) are naive conceptions. \nThe responce patterns to the problems were roughly characterized by some combination within each of the two conceptions.
