From the standpoint of these requests, not only the gear materials but also the gear manufacturing methods including heat treatment are required to study. First, the phenomena of gear failure for the through-hardened gears and the surface-hardened gears were summarized. Secondly, the allowable contact stress numbers for gear material and the roughness factors in calculation of surface durability (pitting) of spur and helical gears were shown. Thirdly, from the test results obtained at the university laboratories, the new alloy steels were developed to increase the surface durability of carburized and hardened gears.
