First, the surface roughness and surface hardness of test rollers were examined in detail. These results show that the surface -finishing process gives a characteristic in the condition of surface profile, and that the increase of hardness on and near the surface does not occur in the case of case -carburized steels.  Secondly, the surface durability of case -carburized rollers with smooth surfaces was investigated by using a 2 -roller type contact fatigue testing machine.  The test results reveal that the initial surface roughness has a remarkable influence on the surface fatigue of case -carburized steels under a heavy load.  Furthermore, it is found that  the fatigue – cracks are initiated at the surface of test rollers and they propagate beneath the surface by stress cycles.
