First, the gear accuracies and tooth surface roughnesses of ground gears, hobbed gears and finish-hobbed gears were examined in detail. From the test results, it is found that the new finish-hob, which has many gashes and a positive rake angle ,is useful for the improvement of gear accuracy and toot surface roughness. Secondly, the surface durability of gear pairs with a combination of ground gear and hobbed gear (or finish-hobbed gear) was investigated by using a power circulating-type gear testing machine.\nThe test results reveal that the pinion (ground gear) should be substantially harder than the gear (mating hobbed gear or finish-hobbed gear)in order to obtain higher load-carrying capacity of medium-hardness gears.
