After perospirone administration, the patient's sensory distortion improved, but he also developed a remarkable improvement of his cognitive function also called \"awakenings\".  Furthermore, the simultaneous administration of several drugs could be avoided by the introduction of perospirone to treat this patient.  The case was a 30-year-old man who had previously been an outpatient.  He was hospitalized after the recurrence of auditory hallucinations, delusions and problematical behavior.  At admission to the hospital, he showed auditory hallucinations, delusions including sensory distortion, irritability and psychomotor excitement.  Almost all symptoms of sensory distortion disappeared within about two weeks after the start of perospirone treatment.  He reflected on his actions, and regretted his previous way of thinking and behavior in the past, and gradually became more aware of his illness.  Due to his improved cognitive function, he temporarily developed anxiety and mild agitation because he was confronting reality.  No other side effects due to the administration of perospirone could be observed.  Although irritability and psychomotor excitement were observed at the start of his hospitalization, we found that a greater general improvement could be obtained due to the perospirone treatment in comparison to the previous medication regimen which mainly consisted of sedative antipsychotic drugs.
