Firstly, we review how regional innovation studies has progressed toward the systematization of the studies since 2016, and what the current conditions and issues are. Then, we propose a direction for the systematization of regional innovation studies with a focus on "regional resources" and their "organic linkage." There have been three stages in the discussion on the systematization of regional innovation studies. In the first stage, it was suggested that regional innovation studies consist of two areas: "understanding regional resources" and "utilizing regional resources. In the second stage, it was proposed that regional innovation studies consist of three component areas: regional studies, regional resource theory, and regional resource utilization theory. In the third stage, the need for a clear distinction between regional studies and regional innovation studies and the need for discussion on the nature of "regional resources" were proposed. Although there is no clear definition of regional resources, "organic linkage" and "hierarchy" are notable characteristics of them. Based on these characteristics of regional resources, regional innovation studies can be organized into the following three research areas. 1. Research on regional resource networks Research targets the "organic linkage" and "hierarchy" of regional resources. This research is concerned with the value of regional resources themselves and their connections with other local resources. 2. Research on regional social systems This is a research area that overlaps the current social system and regional resource networks, and investigates what kind of regional social system should be constructed. 3.
