          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">We investigated the performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer on metal cations contamination by feed water. Artificial river water, called Soft water, was used to analyze the effect of metal cations on the PEM water electrolyzer. The results showed that the operating voltage was increased drastically and the amount of hydrogen which is permeated from the cathode to the anode through the membrane was also increased. The performance degradation is induced with increasing Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations adsorbed on the membrane. Therefore, divalent cations have a stronger affinity than monovalent cations to degrade the PEM water electrolyzer.</datacite:description>
